As part of our whole school Victorian theme week, the school visited Leighton Hall to learn about it's remarkable history, what it was like to live or work there during the Victorian era and even a surprise Bird of Prey display. We learned about the lives of the people who lived at the hall and were given a guided tour of each of Leighton Hall's fascinating rooms, upstairs and downstairs.

Come Dine With Me - The Desserts, by Mr McGurk

Our Design and Technology challenge reaches its epic finale, Class 4 have been taking on the 'Come Dine with Me' challenge. Each group has researched and planned their own part of a three course meal. Working in groups, the children will prepare, make and taste their own meals. They will then be scored on appearance, smell and taste. Friday afternoon brought the finale and the desserts, each group had to come up with a recipe using pineapple. We saw everything sweet and tasty from Pinapple berry salad to a Pineapple upside down cake. Here is how they did...

Our Design and Technology work continues, Class 4 have been taking on the 'Come Dine with Me' challenge. Each group has researched and planned their own part of a three course meal. Working in groups, the children will prepare, make and taste their own meals. They will then be scored on appearance, smell and taste. Friday was the turn of the Mains, each group had to come up with a recipe using a Sausages. These ranged from Cheesy sausage on a bun to Sausage and mash with Laurence's own Yorkshire pudding recipe. Class 4 and RSPB on Warton Mires., by Mr McGurk

Over the last few weeks, Class 4 have been visited by Kath from the RSPB to do some work about the new Warton Mire nature reserve just outside our school.  This new venture has been devised to help protect our local environment and wildlife, promote protecting our local area and to work to protect our homes and local are from flooding. Kath has included the children in asking question, generating ideas and thinking about what we can do to care for our local areas of natural beauty. We started with a visit in school and then a field trip onto the Mire itself.

What a week we have had! On Friday, Shaun Gash, who uses a wheelchair, came into school to tell his inspirational and motivational story and he also allowed us to play a few round of wheelchair basketball! What a day, Class 4 is full of very competitive wheelchair basketballers!

Year 6 Leavers, by Mr McGurk

As the year comes to an end we are preparing to say goodbye to our amazing bunch of Year 6s! The last few days have included our superb show 'Archbishop Huttons Got Talent', a trip to Lancaster to watch Jurassic World and  a rounders pizza party and he sad defeat of the school staff by Year 6! ?

The Priory in Lancaster is currently hosting a spectacular piece of artwork named Gaia - the Earth - so class 4 jumped on the train and enjoyed a fantastic day exploring the church, taking in the beautiful views of our home planet!

Class 3 and 4 worked with Lancaster University to learn about the artist and nature lover John Ruskin. They used sketching, clay and close observation to produce some super art work.

Classes 3 and 4 have enjoyed a super day at Borwick Activity Centre today. They went canoeing, caving, bouldering, did low ropes and team challenges! Everyone tried really hard and worked as a team! Well done everyone.

Class Four, by Mrs Barclay

Today it was Class Four's turn to have an art masterclass! Thank you to Emily for our amazing artist workshops over the past couple of weeks. 

Class 4 listened carefully to Emily's instructions and looked at the Blue Tit in lots of detail. We separated our page into 4 and drew the outline first. We then looked at the detail including the eye and the wings. Last, we coloured the blue tit using crayons and used them to mix and build up colours.

As part of our science topic, Class 4 received a visit from the planetarium team at Lancaster Univeristy. They wowed us with their interactive journey through space before we got to make our planets designed by the children in our class. What an amazing day!

As part of science week, Class 4 have been investigating the impact craters of meteorites.  What effects the depth and size of craters and why? We decided to test height, mass, weight, weight shape and materials. We enjoyed being able to make our predictions and test them as part of science work!

STEM Visit from Lancaster University

This week, Class 4 were visited by Doctor Irene from the Lancaster Unviveristy to talk about engineering and its application to the world of space science.

The children took part in three investigations; Apollo 13 Emergency, materials tests for the space shuttle and building a Mars lander for future space exploration!

The children had to use their prior knowledge, teamwork, outside the box thinking, planning skills and many other skills. The children have been challenged to become ... Engineers!

Class 4 were visited by a marvellous skipping coach last week! We picked up lots of new skills, skipped alone and in groups and were pushed to our skipping limits! 

National Poetry Day Assembly, by Mr McGurk

On Friday 8th October, as part of our new Super Readers scheme,  all the children celebrated National Poetry Day. From 'Oy Frog,' to poems about pirates, pigs and strict teachers, all classes have been reading and performing poetry and ended the day with a performance for parents at celebration assembly!!

This half term our topic is based on science and forces.

We have been exploring resistance. What is it and how does it affect falling objects?

The children decided to test how the material and size of a prachute affect the speed of descent! Take a look at our scientist in action.

Class 4 have have been lucky enough to have been visited by Steve Pemberton, a cricket coach from the Lancashire Cricket Foundation. We are beginning to develop our cricket skills and playing games of diamond cricket.

Class 4 Lego City Builders, by Mr McGurk

Class 4 have had a visit from Stephen from the Creative Builders Team. He brought thousands of Lego bricks with him and the challenge for us to become Electro City Builders. Using a range of design and structural skills we worked together in small teams to build our own amazing powered up city!

What an amazing day! Class 4 worked together as the fantastic team that I know they are and we got to see all the creativity, teamwork, problem solving and collaborative skills that we have been developing all year. Stephen even commented that he was impressed with the final product. Take a look at our photos. I'm very impressed with what they made together.
