What does HISTORY look like at  Archbishop Hutton’s?

Our exciting knowledge based History curriculum enables the children to share ideas, express their opinions and apply their factual and procedural knowledge learned in a wide range of meaningful contexts. Starting with a focus on our village and family in KS1, we expand our understanding by studying in depth the history of the world around us.

Every new theme begins with an I Wonder session, where the children consider their own ideas, consider prior knowledge and pose questions they would like to answer during the theme. This helps the teacher plan the focus for the learning and also stimulates self motivated enquiry.

Where possible, learning is extensively supported and enriched by field study, visits, workshops, artefact boxes, role-play and practical resources.

Progression of factual and procedural knowledge and understanding is carefully planned, reviewed and adapted yearly to ensure that children’s learning builds effectively over time.

Why is HISTORY an important part of our curriculum?

The study of History at our school stimulates an interest in and a sense of wonder about people, places and the past. It helps our young

people make sense of a complex and constantly changing world.

It is vital for our pupils to be able to explain how they fit into the History of the world and how human experiences are similar and different across time and cultures. Understanding that like us, people in the past had basic needs, such as shelter, clothing, food, family and education teaches us to appreciate how society has changed and adapted across time and cultures.

By building on pupils' own experiences and those of their family we move from the personal to the global.  As with the teaching of Geography, we see  History as playing a integral part in our pupils becoming successful, empathetic global citizens.

We believe that the teaching of History gives pupils an understanding of the past through learning about human achievements and experiences. It makes our pupils inquisitive and teaches them to be thinkers, not accepting one version of events.  Allowing us to ask and answer questions about the past, helps us understand how these impact the world we live in today.

Using real-life experiences both inside and outside of school and by learning through exploration and discovery, History lessons are opportunities to consider and raise further questions, stimulating self learning.  These are skills which can then be used across all areas of learning.
