Paper Weaving in Class 2, by Miss Hughes

Class 2 started their Summer Term Art unit today. We are learning about textiles and fabrics, focusing on the skill of 'weaving'. Today we had a go at weaving with paper and card, to practise the technique and see the effect. We will use this, and the work of textile artist Judith Rowley, to inspire us to design our own tartan. Look how proud we are of our weaving! We found it quite tricky, but we persevered, helped one another and all achieved it in the end.

Key Stage 1 Geography, by Miss Hughes

Class 2 have been hard at work, learning all about the United Kingdom. We can name the four countries, their capitals and some of the surrounding seas. We can name many other cities too, and even find some of them on a map! We have learnt the difference between human and geographical features and know what some of the key physical landmarks of the UK are. We went outside this week with our 'binoculars' to spot what physical and human features we could see in the area surrounding our school - we imagined being a bird, flying overhead! Then we had a fantastic treat on Thursday - we received responses from the school children of Tobermory! They wrote to each child in our class individually, answering our questions and asking us more. We were so excited to read our personalised letters!

STEM Day, by Miss Hughes

We were very lucky to participate in an inter-schools STEM competition recently. Key Stage 1 worked alongside some Year 5s and some very kind parent helpers, to design, make, test and evaluate functioning pneumatic dumper trucks. Class 2 worked absolutely superbly, putting all of the DT skills and knowledge they have gained ove the last term with Mr Hellier to good use. They worked brilliantly in small teams and in the end, all seven of our minibeast dumper trucks worked! The children were able to explain to me how the wheels worked and how the dumper mechanism worked, using words like axles, pivots and inflate. Leo, Erin, Eleanor and Connor went along to the competition with Mrs Gavriluk and some KS2 pupils, to represent our hard work. They won three out of the six categories! Well done, everyone.

Scottish treat!, by Miss Hughes

Kathryn, who is from Scotland, very kindly came in to Class 2 on Friday and read The Gruffalo to us, in Scots! We talked about the meaning of 'dialect' and 'accent' and she quizzed us on our understanding of some of the words in the story, using our prior knowledge of the story and infering meaning from other words around them. We learnt that "scran" means food in Liverpool, as well as Scotland! Can you spot any others, on these pages?

Looking back to Spring Term DT, by Miss Hughes

Class 2 are very excited to take part in our whole-school DT Day today, working in teams to build pneumatically operating dumper trucks! Yesterday, we looked back at our Spring Term DT project, when we built ferris wheels in teams. It was very challenging and exciting, but we worked hard to problem solve, strengthen our structures and test them. We're looking forward to applying these skills again with an even trickier project today.

We are so proud of our letter-writing this week in Class 2 that we wanted to share some on the website, for you to see. The children worked hard in pairs and groups to come up with questions for the children in Tobermory, based on the Geography work we have done so far, learning a bit about Scotland and its islands. We are excited to interact with the pupils on Mull, at Tobermory school and the P1 - P3 class at Lochdonhead, too - learning all about island life for a child our age. We have also been reading some Katie Morag books in class, which are set on the fictional island of Struay, inspired by the real hebridean island of Coll.

Class 2 posting letters to Scotland, by Miss Hughes

Class 2 have launched our Geography topic by writing postcards to the children at Tobermory Primary School on the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. We walked to the postbox by the park today to send them off, and the postie came by while we were there, too, so we've seen our envelope get sent on its way! We had a wee play at the park, while we were there (practising teamwork, resilience and calculated risk-taking). We are very lucky to live and go to school in a village as pretty and peaceful as Warton! Doesn't it look beautiful in the sunshine? We spotted the old schoolhouse on our way, as well.

Cross Country Competition, by Mr Pugh

It was a very wet and chilly afternoon on Thursday when we met with Silverdale, Carnforth Community and Holme schools, for our annual Cross Country competition. The children ran in 8 races across the year groups and we 12 gold, silver or bronze medals. In the end it was declared that we were the winners, for the fifth year running. A superb effort and despite the weather, everyone was amazing.

Solway Aviation Museum, by Miss Hughes

Class One and Class Two went to the Solway Aviation Museum in Carlisle today. This was a nice way for Class 2 to recap on their learning about the history of flight, as well as learning even more about developments in aviation over the last 100 years. The team were fantastic; so knowledgeable, helpful and super at explaining things in ways that were fun and interesting to our littlest learners! All of the children had a fantastic day and some would even love to return with their families another time! The volunteers said the children from ABH were superbly behaved and clearly knew lots about flight already - well done Class 1 and 2!

To round off Science week we brought in Science boxes which we had made at home. We explained our boxes to children from other classes and they were displayed in an exhibition for parents. Look how great they are!

We had an incredible Science Week. Class One explored sound, healthy teeth and what we should feed the birds. Class Two drummed and learnt about habitats. Class Three classified animals and learnt all about birds. Class Four looked after Tea Bag Babies, compared heights and shoe sixe, learnt about Charles Darwin and investigated bird's beaks. On Friday we brought in our Science boxes and talked to our classmates about what we had learnt. We were also visited by lots of parents who came to see what we had been doing. Everyone who worked hard was given a ticket for interesting questions and answers, careful investigations and thoughtful scientific thinking. The tickets were drawn out and books and a science set were given as prizes.

Music lessons in Class 2, by Miss Hughes

Mr Hellier is teaching class 2's music at the moment, and they are working hard on learning about rhythm and pulse through drumming. They have been enjoying working hard to become a 'corp of drummers', learning the importance of playing in unison. They have composed a short piece which they hope to perform in an assembly before Mr Hellier leaves us.

Building Stable Structures, by Miss Hughes

Class 2 spent this afternoon having a go at building the chair they designed last week, for a teddy bear to sit on. They watched Mr Hellier demonstrate how to join the tubes and columns they created last week to make a stable structure, reinforced where needed with stronger materials (card).

UPDATED: We have now made our chairs, and are so proud of them!! Mostly, Mr Hellier and Miss Hughes are proud of how we have been working in pairs and teams to achieve a goal together, and developing our fine motor skills. This project was tricky, but we persevered and are thrilled with what we have produced.

Multiplication in Key Stage 1, by Miss Hughes

Year 1 and Year 2 have been beginning to learn about multiplication this week, looking at how to recognise and make equal groups and count in steps of 2, 5 and 10 to count these amounts more efficiently.

Class 2 have been enjoying having PE with Cam from Morecambe Football Club, for the last 4 weeks. Cam has been working with the children on their fundamental movement skills that contribute to striking and fielding games.

Exploring Stable Structures in Class 2, by Miss Hughes

Class 2 investigated the structural properties of cylinders, compared with other 3D shapes, in DT this afternoon. They looked at examples in the real world, then had a go at rolling and taping paper and card to create tubes, or poles, with which to build. Next week we will move on to building structures with our cyclindrical shapes, thinking about how to make our structures even more stable.

Class 2 Maths, by Miss Hughes

This week, class 2 have been learning about money in their Maths lessons. Year 2 are counting coins and notes, making the same amount in different ways and adding amounts with pounds and pence. Year 1 are recognising coins and making amounts up to 20p, securing their understanding of place value of amounts with a ten and ones.

Class 2 are learning about shape in their Maths lessons at the moment. They have been learning to recognise and name 2D and 3D shapes, by exploring their properties. Here are Year 1 making some trains out of connecting 3D shapes, and some Year 2s exploring patterns and problem solving with 2D shape.

Historical investigation in Class 2, by Miss Hughes

Class 2 started the new term by being 'picture detectives'. They worked out that their topic this term is all about the History of flight, from the historical images they examined. The children then worked in pairs to decorate and build their own gliders! We will have a plane flying competition later in the term.

We had such great fun doing our Elf Run. We created lots of power to fire up Santa's Toy Factory and we also raised over £700. Fantastic work everyone and thanks to all of the generous sponsors.
