The role of school governors

Archbishop Hutton’s V.C.  Primary School governors are volunteers who oversee how our school operates. They are involved in decisions about all aspects of the school. The governors support the headteacher, while asking questions and making sure that the headteacher is taking the school in the right direction. School governors have legal duties, powers and responsibilities. They are like a Board of Directors and meet regularly throughout the year, making decisions about how the school is run.

Governors are appointed to help:
  • decide what is taught;
  • set standards of behaviour;
  • interview and select staff;
  • decide how the school budget is spent
School Governors comprise:
  • vicar from local parishes;
  • parents;
  • community representatives;
  • staff at the school.
Parent Governors:
  • have a child in school;
  • are elected by parents of the school;
  • serve, as do other Governors, for four years.
